Fear

Hello!

It's been a while since I've blogged. I hope you're well.

This year is a getting over my fears year, which always seemed ridiculously scary. Once I have conquered each one, I felt stronger and braver.

What the hell am I talking about? Anyway, I can't believe November is almost over. Christmas is around the corner!

Sisters Of The Moon is coming along slowly. I'm back on it again, and I'm sure I'll catch up sooner than later. I'm aiming to finish the first draft before Christmas Eve. I'm so excited! :)

I'm going to leave it here for now.
Have a great evening! xxx

The Mood

Sometimes, the mood I'm in is not helping me write a certain scene in my book. When I'm in that mind frame, I need to do something about it.

There are a couple of things that I do. I play a soundtrack to a movie, a certain song or a film.
There was a time when I was writing my first book and I just couldn't get in the mood I needed to be in. There was only one thing to do. Put Twilight on and watch it while I wrote. Twilight is a very angst ridden teen movie. I really needed to be in a very angst mood. It really worked.

For the second book Moth, I listened to Fleetwood Mac and the soundtrack to 50 Shades Of Grey a lot. When great music collide with the right mood while writing, magic happens and the words flow. It's amazing. I love doing that.

I saw this van when I was walking home from work and I had to take a picture of it. I love it! I love music. It matters a lot to me. I've created a whole group of characters just listening to Fleetwood Mac. The song Sisters Of The Moon inspired The Sisters Of The Moon in Moth. Also, there was a scene in Moth where Eva was being resurrected by them. The mood of the scene was inspired by the songs, I can't even remember! So many songs!

If you're stuck trying to writing something, try this! :)
I created a writing playlist of the songs I write to.

Here's the link. I hope it helps you write.

The Diary Of Ariel Winters

I told my friend Alice that if I started writing a YA book that I'm probably going through a mid life crises! Haha! Guess what happened? I started writing a YA book!

I don't want to confess that I'm having fun with it. Somehow I don't want to admit it. Oh well. It's really good fun! :)

Yesterday, I was thinking of a modern way of writing it while it still being some sort of a book. I set up a Twitter account for @TheArielWinters

Follow along as she writes in her virtual diary to Ophelia. I'm also writing it in a notebook. The posts aren't always the same. I post pictures as well as mini updates. I will update you more in my vlogs.

I have thought of making her a YouTube channel, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe later in the book.

Here's a diary entry .https://www.instagram.com/p/BHpOpeRh7Lt/?taken-by=phoenixfireafterdark

The Time When I Started Something New

The Lone Wolf

Sometimes writing seems like a lonely trek up a steep mountain. Sometimes it seems like no one knows you exist but yourself. Sometimes I feel that way too. But when I start talking to a friend on what I'm working on, I find myself part of a pack.

The journey may be lonely, but the road is paved with friends.

Perseverance

When I tell someone that I write fantasy books, the person sighs and says that they wish they could write a book.

The conversation continues to how they wish they could finish writing a story and how they used to write when they were kids.

I always say that no matter what they're writing, it is possible to finish it. It is possible to finish writing a book. When I give advise, it is ignored as the 'I don't have time' and 'I wish I could be as creative as you' comments continue.

If you are reading this and want to write or finish writing a book, you will make it a priority. It's easy when you break down a certain number of words or write a page a day. After all, most writers started off writing books while holding down a full time job.

The Time When It Was About Goals And Affirmations

Monday 27 June 2016

Passion

When I turned 10, an explosion of poetry came out of me. I don't know what happened. I couldn't stop writing the damn things. It was like a volcano. I filled notebook after notebook. It was fun but also made me look like a freak. Some time later, I started writing short stories. I couldn't stop creating.

Writing wasn't the only thing I loved. I started painting and drawing. I couldn't get enough of it. I went through the starving artist faze and studied Fine Arts too. I loved English literature as much as any day dreaming writer did.

From there, fast forward to a few years ago when I started writing longer stories, songs and more poems. There was a point where I didn't know what to do with myself. I stopped writing for a while but kept writing poems and songs.

There was a weird day at work when I had this idea for a book. I started scribbling things down during my lunch break. When I was back at work again, it was all I was thinking about. When I got home, I cracked open my laptop and started writing the first chapter of my first book. The more I wrote, the more the story unfurled. I wanted to have some element of reality as well as fantasy.

There was a point during the journey when I realised that I was a writer. I was a writer. This is it. It hit me. Shit, no one is going to take me seriously. Everyone is going to hate my book. There was no way I was going support myself as a writer.

These were my old thoughts, my old beliefs. People might tell you exactly what I said before. Ignore them. Keep writing. Finish that damn book and write another one. Passion will keep you going. You know you love it.

I'm still writing now. I still love it. I still write poems and songs. Who cares in what form you write. Remember your passion. It will follow you to your grave. Regret never made anyone into anything.
Never give up.

Remember, passion will get you through.

Good night! xxx  :)

The Time When I Showed You The Lanes

Starting Out As A Writer Part 2

Starting off as a writer is one of the hardest things, come to think of it. Writers aren't taken as seriously as other jobs. When I was an artist, I'd get the same expression when I said I was a writer; surprise, then a 'you'll never make money as an artist/writer look' and finally a glazed over look.

Although, since JK Rowling had success with Harry Potter, the glazed over look turned into 'oh well, you never know' look. At that point, instead of adopting an F U look, I smile back with a 'DAMN RIGHT' look. Works every time.

As a fiction writer, it all takes a turn for the worst. When asked, 'what kind of writing do you do?'
I reply, 'fiction'.
Here it comes wait for it.
'oh ... what kind of fiction?'
'Fantasy'
I can see the flash of lightening, hear thunder clapping, as suddenly as it went, it's back. The glazed over look.

Now I'm ever more compared to a non-fiction writer. Apparently, they do really well, sell books, make money, have, wait for it, 'VALUE'.

If you think non-fiction writing is the only type of writing that has value, think again. Since I began reading Neil Gaiman's books, I have discovered how many lives have been saved just from reading his books. The hope they have instilled in his readers, including me. That it's possible to do what I love and make a living out of it. Everything is impossible until it has been proven possible. Now this takes me to Alice Through The Looking Glass. There is so much in this film than the story or the movie seems to have on the surface. Time portrayed as a man and time travelling to save the Mad  Hatter's family. I won't spoilt it any further if you haven't watched it. It has so many layers to it that it left me awe struck. Fiction digs deeper and pulls at your insides more that non-fiction does. That is my opinion, I'm stating it here.

I found an interesting article about fiction.

The Time When I Caught The Thunder

Starting Out As A Writer Part 1

When I first started writing my first book, I couldn't stop. It just flowed out and I kept writing until I finished it. After editing, I started pitching to agents and publishers. Getting rejected can be one of the hardest things. At the beginning, I was excited about the rejection e-mails. Why, you're probably asking, was I excited about rejection e-mails?

Well, one of them had to be an acceptance e-mail. One of the 22 e-mails had to say yes. No one said yes, but they were positive rejections. I was mildly surprised. After trying for a while, I decided to self-publish it. I edited again and published it on Amazon  through Kindle Direct Publishing. At the beginning there was some traction and then a few sales. A few months later, the excitement was over and the sales dropped. For a coule of years, there were hardly any sales. It was very discouraging, and soul destroying. I didn't stop, I couldn't stop writing. I had to carry on.

It was an odd day when I had the idea of my second book. It came to me at work on a day when I felt like writing a dark story. When I went on my lunch break, I had to write down the ideas in my head. I started getting really excited about it and couldn't get it out of my head. When I got  home, I dreamt of the story I had to write. That was the start of the second book.

In the second part of this blog, I'll continue my story as a writer.

Good Night xxx :)

Personal Space

I find as a writer that the place I write is my personal space. I tried a couple of times to write in Starbucks and Costa. That was a fail, to some degree. I wanted to see if I could write in a public space. I don't like it. It feels intrusive and awkward.

When I write, I like to write in a space where I feel safe. I like to write in a space that I can control and where I can be myself. I guess that's the curse of the introvert.

I write best in my bedroom on my bed with my notebook and pen beside me. I don't know if anyone else writes this way. I'm going to try to write in public spaces again and see how I do. May be I'll create some sort of a challenge to find a public space that I find safe enough to let my imagination loose.

I'll try to write in a different place once a week and let you know how I get on.

Good Night. xxx :)

Hearts and Feelings

During my singing lesson, I was talking to my coach about one of  the characters in the book called Eva. I've mentioned her a lot as I've been working on her for a long time. I was telling her that Eva's heart was pulled out when she was staked at Richmond Park. The wolves who attacked her ate the rest of her heart while she lay on the snow watching it fall. When the wolves ran off, she just lay there recovering from the gaping wound in her chest feeling numb and lifeless.

I found this interesting article about the heart and the sense of familiarity.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/308849.php

We started talking about feelings and the heart, how they are linked together as well as the brain. I found it fascinating. I know exactly where to take Eva on her journey now. I won't tell you anymore. You'll just have to wait until I finish the book.

I'm creeping up to 5,000 word now. I like to give myself small targets to get me where I want to go quicker than bigger ones. Bigger target always seem overwhelming to begin with until you start breaking them down. As I write, I keep creating these small targets until I reach the main target. I usually write a bit more than that because I find that psychologically, it tricks me into thinking I'm nearly there. I guess this is one tip into how to write a book.

It's a short one today. I'll catch up with you tomorrow. xxx :)

The Forest Walkers

The Time When I Became A Forest Walker

Monday 20 June 2016

Every Day

Recently I've been reading a book called The House On Cold Hill by Peter James. It's about a family that move from Brighton and Hove ( where I live  and love that it is set in the area more or less ) into the Sussex countryside. Strange and odd things start to happen in the house and to them.
I've read a few chapters and it's pretty good! When I finished the book, I'll let you know what I think of it.

This is what happens when you start writing and what you must keep doing.

The moment I told a friend of mine that I've been writing, every day I get asked about it. Every day I'm expected to update my friends on 'how is it going?', 'what happened next?' and 'oh well, you'll be published some day.'
Or 'when are we going to see your books in the shops?', 'you'll be famous some day!' and 'how many books have you sold?'.
They are usually said in various tones of curiosity, intrigue and believe it or not, antagonism. No matter what anyone says or what they seem to say between the lines, you have to write every day.
I try to follow my own advice. There are time for whatever reason, I haven't written for a day or two, I feel odd, weird and out of whack. So I keep reminding myself how important it is to keep writing every day. It doesn't matter how many words you write, just write. Like Nike say, Just Do It.

The Time When I Updated You On My Blog

The Moon Chronicles

Hello everyone!

So much has happened and I need to let you in.

I'm well into writing the sequel to Moth. It's called The Sisters Of The Moon. It follows on directly after the big fight scene at the end of Moth. One of the things I'm writing about is Eva. As you know from the first book, Eva was one of the main characters in Moth. In the second book, something happens to her and she starts to turn into a different version of herself. I won't tell you much because I don't want to give anything away. She's been giving me some trouble so I started writing in a notebook instead of on my laptop. This is helping. I will show you what my new notebook looks like.

It looks so cool! :)

I love to write in smooth unruled pages. I started writing with a purple gel pen which is really cool and smooth on the creamy paper. I'm still working on Eva and will update you on her current unsettled status.

I'm loving the name of the series. The Moon Chronicles. It really sticks in people's heads; I've been experimenting on my friends to see if they like it or remember it. They do. :)

On my birthday, I decided to vlog everyday for a whole year. It's a scary challenge but I decided that I was going to do it no matter what. So I kept going and today it would be vlog 4o. A significant number.

Towards the end of last year I started the James Patterson Writing Masterclass. I'm not sure if I blogged about it then. There was a period of time when I forgot that I even had it. So I continued on and so far it's pretty good!

In the picture above is what I use to write and vlog. A Sony H300 DSLR is what I use to vlog when I'm in-doors or create separate videos. The Sony headphones are the best headphones I've ever used. I've had them for about a couple of years and they still work well. They are the longest running headphones I've ever had. Good one Sony! :) I write and edit my videos on the HP laptop, as well as do research, etc. I use the fruit notebook to scribble notes or ideas I have while writing. It's a life saver. The book Honeymoon by James Patterson is part of the masterclass. I've read about half of it. It's better than I thought it was. I need my glasses to see when I'm not wearing my contact lenses and the pen is for writing in the notebook.

Recently I purchased Neil Gaiman's new book Views From The Cheap Seats. I read the first chapter. Jesus it's good! I'll update you when I've read more.

My friends Dre and Jon started a podcast called Voices In The Dark. You have to check it out! It's really good! I bet you'll be addicted to it. They have released three episodes. In this series they talk about Robert Greene's 48 Laws Of Power. The link is the first one below.

I think I've updated you so far.
Have a great day! xxx :)

The Time When I Loved A Book

Episode 7 is a short one. I got carried away with writing. This is the first week I've been vlogging for a whole week. Can't wait for the next one!

I've been really getting into a character called Raven in my book. She's definitely not human. I'll write a separate blog later this week and let you know what I've been up to.

Catch you later! :)

3 Miles

I recently came across Medium and love it.
Here's the link: https://medium.com/@AmethystStars

I also wrote a 1000 words yesterday. I'm really excited about the plot I'm writing and what's going to happen to the characters. I like doing bad things to them. It's sounds awful but I like being the bad guy in my book. So much fun.

I gave my birthday cake to my housemates because they are the best!

Earlier today, I went on a 3 mile walk. It was great and explored a nearby park walking all around it.
I vlogged it and the video should be up tomorrow.

I used to sit it here and read but now it's over grown and there are so many bugs! :P

I'm off to write now! Catch you later! :)

The Sequel

I hope you've enjoyed reading Moth. I'm writing a sequel to Moth called Sisters Of The Moon. :)
I'm So excited about it. I started writing new characters and not just humans too!
It carries on right from the end of Moth and jumps into the next plots involving Eva, Daniel, Garfield and Valentino. There's danger, there are fast cars, beautiful creatures, and mythical beings.

Recently, I was thinking of what to call these series of books. It came to me in a minute. The Moon Chronicles. How can it not be?

The moon encompasses everything mythical, different and magical. Also, if you noticed the cover of Moth, you'll see that it has a big moon on the cover in black and white, and seems mystical. Maybe I'll do a similar thing for Sisters Of The Moon.

Moth, the monster, has turned into something like a moth zombie towards the end of Moth. I have ideas of a massive fight scene between him and Eva. I'm excited to explore this area. In the meantime, I'll continue writing the sequel aka Book 2.

I took this picture on the way to the gym last week. Looking back on it, I was thinking of Moth at the bottom of the sea versus the people sunbathing on the seafront not knowing what lay a few feet away from them.

My next writing challenge is writing 1000 words a day to finish Sisters Of The Moon by the end of July. Can I do it? Read what I'm up to here as I keep myself accountable by blogging everyday.

Have a great day!

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

I was so inspired by this vlog that I had to share it. Be crazy and follow your dreams.

I'm glad that I kept on writing. If I gave up, I wouldn't have published two books in two years.

I know that writing fantasy books is my passion. Never give up on following your dreams.

Published Again

Hello!

I haven't blogged for a while. I'm going to try to do it at least once a week.

Last week, I published my book Moth on Amazon! Yeay! I also published it as a glossy paperback book on Amazon. I'll insert the link at the end of the blog.

I'm So excited!

I'm still submitting my book to agents and really want to get one. I really want to see my book in a bookstore. I hope you enjoy it. It's definitely more exciting than my first book. I really enjoyed the whole process from beginning to end!
I have to say that writing a fantasy book that has crime and erotica all in one was fun to write! :p

Today I submitted my book to an agent from the DHH agency.

I'll update you on my book submissions.

Here's the link for my book.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moth-Arwa-Stone/dp/1530124549/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456509665&sr=8-1&keywords=Moth+by+Arwa+Stone

I did It!

Today, I published my book Moth on Amazon!

I'm So excited!

Last night I had 3 hours of sleep and finished editing it. It was epic and I'm proud that I finally got it out!

The next thing I'm going to do is contact local radio stations to promote it and PR agencies to help me promote it.

I'm still trying to get an agent and a publisher. The hustle is real. Sometimes the process was painful and other times it was amazing. I'll update you on it!

Still Here

Hi!

I'm just letting you know that I'm still here, alive and kicking. :)

Good Night! xxx :)

Sunday 17 January 2016

More Submissions

Today I submitted my book to three agents.

They are:

RCW Literary Agency
Watson Little Literary Agency
Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency

I also started writing the sequel to MOTH. I picked up from the end of the first book. The snow storm is still going strong and most of the characters are taking care of their wounds after the epic fight scene. I won't say any more yet.

It's a short one today. There will be more going on next week.
Good Night! xxx :)

Thursday 14 January 2016

My Second Submission

Today I submitted my book to A . M . Heath Literary Agents. I had to submit it through a form online. It was a really cool way to do it because it was different from any other agents website.

Tomorrow I'll start writing the second novel in the series. I have an idea how I'm going to do it. I started the James Patterson Writing Masterclass. I'm so excited for this!

It's a short blog today. I'll keep you posted on everything. Good Night! xxx :)

Tuesday 12 January 2016

My First Submission

Today I have rewritten my book's synopsis and cover letter. I put together the first three chapters and sent my first e-mail submission.

I read three articles called How Literary Agents Work, How to Get An Agent and Getting Hooked Out Of The Slush Pile. They were really informative. I also re-read the sections regarding writing a synopsis and covering letter.

I went through a long list of publishers that deal with fantasy and fiction marking them with a purple pen. I did the same thing with a list of agents. After a while, I stopped and decided to submit to an agency called LBA Literary Agency. They represent a seriously well know and well read amount of writers. They seem really cool and I had a good feeling about them.

I'll be submitting to agents all week and blogging about it. It'll be fun to find out what happens.

Good Night! xxx :)

Time Off

For the last few days I've decided to have some time off the internet, for the most part. I'm also trying not to be on my phone in the evenings. It feels so Good!
Tomorrow I'll work on more book stuff and will  fill you in then.
Good Night! xxx :)

Tuesday 5 January 2016

My Synopsis

Today I started writing the synopsis for my book. It took me a while to get started. I referred back to the Writers' and Artists yearbook a couple of times. It was fine when I got stuck into it. I took a picture of it as proof.

I have to say that I'm getting very nervous, mainly about pitching. Not the act of doing it. I guess it's the reactions and responses I'll be getting back. Oh well, I'll just dive straight into it.
Good Night! xxx :)

Monday 4 January 2016

Writing a Synopsis

Today I went back to work after having about a week off for Christmas and the New Year. I also went to the gym with my friend Alice and we both kicked ass! :)

Afterwards, I sat down with the Writers' and Artists' yearbook 2016 and skimmed through the table of contents. Then I marked the pages that listed UK literary agents and publishers. I read through a chapter called Writing a Synopsis. I found it really helpful and gave some really good tips. It's getting late, so tomorrow I have to write a synopsis. There are other things I've got to do as well but I'll fill you in on them in tomorrow's blog.

   Good Night! xxx :)

Sunday 3 January 2016

Editing Day 20

I really enjoyed editing today. This is the last editing blog. I will be moving onto making a list of agents and publishers that deal with Fantasy books. I'll use the Writers and Artists book. It's really useful.

While editing, I clarified a few things in a couple of plots and made a few changes. The main things I did today were correct or add a few things to certain scenes in the book so they make more sense. I tried to make them close to real life so that they would be relatable.

I can't believe that I wrote a book in 2015. Sometimes when I stop and look at my life, I don't know how I got here. I bought my next notebook for MOTH BOOK 2 and when I opened it, I realised that it was not blank on the inside! I love writing on blank thick pages of a hard back notebook. I feel more inspired writing that way. It doesn't matter, I'll still uses it! Haha! :)

I found this picture and it made me laugh. There was a part of the book where I was editing a car chase scene and a woman on a bike was biking up hill in the rain and sleet.

I also edited part of the book where MOTH was in a lab in Oxford. He has a large tank in the middle of the lab with a blue bulb hanging from it. I found this picture that is close to what I imagined it would look like. Doesn't he look like David Blaine? Maybe he can be in my book! Haha! :)

I'll leave it here for now. I will keep blogging on a daily basis and let you know what's going on and how things are going.
Good Night! xxx :)

Saturday 2 January 2016

Editing Day 19

Today I edited 19 pages. The word count is 74, 742.
I really enjoyed editing today. Tomorrow I'm going to start editing super early so that I can finish it by the end of the day.

I made a few changes that made the story better and more exciting. I'm starting to feel really good about it. I found a picture of this swimming pool that reminded me part of the book where Eva and Daniel go to Valentino's house for dinner. He has a pool on the roof that's similar to this with a sky light over it. It just looks so cool!

One of the changes that I made was when Eva was rear ended when she was sitting in traffic. The car that rear ended her was an Aston Martin, but I already have 2 Aston Martin's in the book, a silver and black DB 4 and 5. I changed it to a black and white Lotus Elise. What a super duper car!

   Good Night! xxx :)

Friday 1 January 2016

Editing Day 18

Today I edited 10 pages. The word count is 74724. I corrected a few things and proof read it again.

It took me a while to get started but when I did it was fine. I edited part of the book when Eva started connecting with Daniel on a deeper level and Catherine's funeral was coming up. She was told that she wasn't welcome to the funeral by her mother, but Catherine's sister Beth insisted that she come. Eva also connected with Valentino for the first time in the book.

This is also part of the book where I started another plot of a monster similar to MOTH feeding on people in Brighton. Here are a couple of things I've written about it.

"The pavement glistened underneath the lamp post’s light. Shadows lingered around the corner of the pub. It slithered around the unconscious body, feeling around its head for soft spots. It lowered its head and sunk its pincers into the body’s left temple. The poison liquefied the body’s brain and it drank greedily under the ominous clouds."
- First instance of the monster.

"The sea frothed at the pebbles as wave after wave hit the sea front. Loud music blazed from the clubs. A group of women on a hen night staggered outside clutching onto their coats and jackets. One of them walked along the sea as the others hailed a taxi.

In the shadows, something moved lazily. It followed the woman, now vomiting on her shoes and touched her forehead. Green goo dripped from its pincers as it lowered its head to her temple. Her body convulsed as the poison made its way into her brain. It drank hungrily, growing stronger and bigger with every feed. "
- Second instance of the monster.

Can you imagine the monster crawling up to these people, sinking its pincers into their brains and eating them?

Good Night! xxx :)
